Executive Functioning

On Thursday, we talked about executive functioning skills and how we can use them to support our learning in reading, writing, and math.

Executive functioning skills are the mental tools that help students plan, focus, remember instructions, and manage their time and emotions and they are essential across all subject areas.

In reading, these skills help students track ideas, make connections, and monitor their understanding.

In writing, executive functioning supports organizing thoughts, planning ideas, and revising work.

In math, students rely on these skills to follow multi-step problems, check their work, and apply strategies.

When we intentionally teach and support executive functioning in reading, writing, and math, we help students become more independent, confident learners who are better equipped to tackle challenges in all areas of learning.

How can families support these skills at home?

Simple strategies like creating routines, breaking tasks into smaller steps, encouraging goal setting, and talking through thinking processes can make a big difference in helping students build strong executive functioning habits.
